# What is the Rundit MCP server?
## The Rundit MCP server connects your AI assistant, such as Claude, to your Rundit data. You can ask about your funds, companies and positions in plain language, and let the assistant update your metrics, without exporting anything.
MCP, the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/), is an open standard for connecting AI applications to other systems. Rundit hosts the server at `https://api.rundit.com/mcp`, so there's nothing to install. Your assistant connects with a personal API key, and every request is checked against that key's permissions.
To get started:
### 1. Create an API key
Create a personal API key under Settings → Privacy & Security → API Keys, choose what it can read and write, and select Generate key.
1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → API Keys
2. Give the key a name that says what it's for, for example, "Claude desktop".
3. Optional: set an expiry date. By default the key never expires.

5. Select Generate key and copy the key.
Keep the key private, like a password. Don't paste it into shared documents or files you commit to a code repository.
